Dow tumbles more than 300 points at open after U.S. kills Iranian military leader - MarketWatch

U.S. stock indexes on Friday fell sharply at the open, retreating from their record closes set the previous session, after a U.S. airstrike in Baghdad killed a top Iranian military commander and stoked fears of an escalating conflict in the Middle East. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.81% fell sharply at the open, on the verge of putting in its worst day since early October until paring those losses quickly. The Dow was down 200 points, or 0.7%, at 28,659, but had hit a low of 28,500.36. The S&P 500 index SPX, -0.71% retreated 0.8% at 3,233, while the Nasdaq Composite Index COMP, -0.79% was down 0.8% at 9,016. The Pentagon confirmed late Thursday that the U.S. military had killed Qassem Soleimani, the head of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard's Quds Force, and said the strike was aimed at deterring future Iranian attacks, with investors fearing that that act may spark more intense conflicts in the Middle East.
