米連邦準備制度理事会（ＦＲＢ）のパウエル議長は17日、金融政策に関する議会証言ではあまり出てこない質問を受けた。硬貨に関する問いだ。
下院金融委員会で証言を行った議長に、ジョン・ローズ議員（共和、テネシー州）は新型コロナウイルスの感染拡大がもたらした硬貨不足について認識しているかと質問した。同議員は地元銀行からそうした報告を受けているという。
これに対しパウエル議長は「経済活動の部分的な閉鎖により、硬貨の流通がほぼ完全に止まってしまった」と述べた。
その上で、米金融当局は「これを十分に認識しており、造幣局や各連銀と協力している。経済の再開に従い、硬貨の流れが再び動き始めている」と説明。硬貨不足は一時的なものだと考えていると語った。
